WHEELING – Wheeling firefighters raced to the scene of a structure fire at 2194 National Road shortly after 10 a.m. today as smoke and heavy flames poured from the building.
The fire occurred in the building housing S. White and Sons Monuments and numerous upper floor apartments. No one was reported injured in the fire; however, firefighters were still fighting the blaze at presstime.
Early reports indicate that a large screen TV may have been the source of the fire in a third floor apartment, but Assistant Chief Larry Murphy could not confirm that at presstime. A fire investigator was called to the scene.
As fire crews arrived on the scene, fire hoses were stretched across National Road forcing police to close down the busy thoroughfare through Elm Grove.
Just as firefighters thought the blaze was under control, the building’s roof ignited.
A resident of the second floor, Amber Snider, said she heard no smoke alarms but residents on the third floor ran through the building, knocking on doors to alert others inside. Some of the residents, wearing only pajamas, were forced to flee the flames. A third floor resident was in tears as she told someone on her cell phone that her apartment was on fire.
A resident of the second floor said he could smell something, went into his bathroom and saw smoke. He then left the building.
The second alarm fire brought five engine companies, a ladder truck, rescue truck and dozens of firefighters to the scene. A plume of smoke rising from the scene was easily visible from Interstate 70.
As the fire burned, spectators began to line the sidewalk along National Road.

At approximately 4:45 am Tuesday morning, Wheeling firefighters were sent to the 700 block of N. Front Street on the north end of Wheeling Island for a report of a structure fire. Dispatch indicated that the house was possibly occupied. Rescue 1 responding across the I-70 W bridge reported heavy smoke showing. The Captain of Engine 5, the first unit to arrive on scene, reported the first floor was “fully involved.” Assistant Chief C-2 immediately called for a 10-96 “All hands working” and brought an additional engine company to the scene of the fire.
There were a total of 4 occupants in the house. Three made it out on their own while one was unable to get out. The third occupant re-entered the house to try to rescue the fourth occupant but he was forced out of the house by the intense fire and heat. Firefighters bravely entered the house on fire and were able to carry out the on resident who was unable to make it out himself. Firefighter/EMTs immediately treated and transported both patients to the OVMC and one patient was later transported to a Pittsburgh area hospital in critical condition via a lifeflight helicopter. The other patient died shortly after reaching the OVMC. A pet dog was also inside the house and perished.
After making sure all the residents were safely out, firefighters continued to fight the fire and eventually contained it. Fire crews remained on scene for several hours doing overhaul and putting out the hot spots. The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental. No firefighters were injured.
